![]() The above description came from Who Wants to Know?, and was edited by yours truly.Īlthough her age and origin is unknown, Botan is the best darn ferry woman in the reikai. As people join Yusuke's crew, Botan helps them out as well ( Kuwabara also has a crush on her), and she even helps to protect Keiko during the Saint Beast's assault on the Living World. In addition to her insider's insight, she relays news from Koenma and provides various tools for Yusuke and his crew to use, such as the psychic spyglass (lets Yusuke see through objects) and the communicator. While normally invisible as the Grim Reaper, as Yusuke assistant she becomes as real as you or me (she just doesn't change her appearance like Koenma), though she soon changes clothes to match the times. Once Yusuke returns to life and becomes a Spirit Detective, Botan becomes his assistant. ![]() In any event, Botan helps Yusuke through his ordeal to regain his life. Instead of a robed skeleton with a scythe he encounters a young lady in a kimono riding an oar like a witch rides a broom (it's all based on Japanese tradition, even the oar: it symbolizes the boats that carry the departed souls away). Trust me, even Yusuke was surprised that the "Grim Reaper" wasn't what he expected. She's the conveyor of the recently departed (such as Yusuke at the beginning of the series) to the Spirit World. Their reactions to the mistake are also really cute to me, Botan honestly seems flattered by it and never really gets upset about it, and Yusuke always ends up getting upset and embarrassed by it and it usually looks like that for other pairings before they end up happening. Please note that Botan is only called the Grim Reaper because, well, it fits her job description. Botan & Yusuke imo have better chemistry than Yusuke & Keiko, and I also think it’s very cute when people reprimand him about being with Botan because him & Keiko seem to have a thing and they mistake Botan for his girlfriend. When I see Botan she always seems to have this positive aura that makes the show so much better which is crucial since she is one of the main characters. In my opinion Keiko doesn’t really seem to have a purpose from what I’ve seen so far other than to be Yusuke’s love interest and moral support. I ship Yusuke with Botan, to be honest I don’t ship him with Keiko. I just started watching Yu Yu Hakusho for the first time, and I’m on episode thirteen so it may be a little early to form an opinion on something like a pairing but.
